A Short History
B.O.W. began as a course at the University of Wisconsin
looking into the reasons more women don't participate in many outdoors
activities, such as hunting and fishing. It was determined that women
preferred to learn these skills in a non-competitive atmosphere along
with other women. Professor Christine Thomas ran a workshop the
following year that quickly filled to capacity. More than double the
number accepted were interested in attending.
Becoming an Outdoors Woman in New Hampshire
The NH Fish and Game Department together with the NH Wildlife Federation began offering B.O.W. in 1994 at the Rockywold/Deephaven Camps in Holderness NH.
The camps are located on the shores of Squam Lake, and have the land
and facilities available to present such a program. Currently, the first
115 applications are accepted, however many more apply than can be
accommodated. |
